What is the SBIR program?

SBIR logoThe Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. By including qualified small businesses in the nation's R&D arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the United States gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific research and development needs.

This program is being run in partnership with the The Brink. The Brink is a Small Business Development Center (SDBC) at the Univeristy of San Diego.  Your application for this program will be processed through the Small Business Development Center site.

Mission & Goals

The mission of the SBIR program is to support scientific excellence and technological innovation through the investment of Federal research funds in critical American priorities to build a strong national economy.

The program’s goals are four-fold:

  • Stimulate technological innovation.
  • Meet Federal research and development needs.
  • Foster and encourage participation in innovation and entrepreneurship by women and socially or economically disadvantaged persons.
  • Increase private-sector commercialization of innovations derived from Federal research and development funding.

 

Program Dates

Join us for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Info and Advising Session to learn everything you wanted to know about SBIR funding. This workshop, offered in partnership between The Brink SBDC and the Office of Innovation and Commercialization (OIC) at UC San Diego, is designed for researchers, faculty, and entrepreneurs who are either in the process of starting or considering launching an innovative company. Come if are simply curious about funding opportunities for early stage innovative startups. No prior knowledge is necessary.  

The session  will cover the basics:

  • What is an SBIR grant
  • Agencies offering SBIR grants
  • Phases and award money
  • Who can apply
  • How to search for a grant 
  • Application overview: Proposal sections
  • Approach to writing
  • Timing and planning
  • Panel discussion and Q&A with presenters
