Taner Halicioglu earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from UC San Diego in 1996. He went on to work for such companies as Cisco Systems, Loudcloud and eBay before he landed at Facebook in October 2004, less than a year after the company was founded.
Halicioglu was among Facebook’s first 20 employees. As a software engineer and operations officer, he developed the hardware infrastructure that enabled the social network’s explosive growth. The company now has about 1.5 billion active users worldwide.
He left Facebook in 2009 and served as a reliability engineer at Blizzard before returning to UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering in 2013 as a lecturer.
In June 2015, Halicioglu announced his intention to give $2 million to UC San Diego to help improve teaching in computer science, a program straining to deal with explosive growth.
“I want to give the Department of Computer Science and Engineering the resources it needs to teach students and the ability to serve as many aspiring students as possible,” said Halicioglu. “These teachers truly inspire students.”
