Description:

UC San Diego Research Affairs –The Office of Innovation and Commercialization is partnering with Foley and Lardner LLP, a premier law firm in corporate and intellectual property matters, to bring Trending Topics in Healthcare IP Seminar series to UC San Diego and the Mesa.

As the commercial landscape changes, particularly in the with respect to reimbursement policy, innovative companies in early stages of development must consider a number of issues that have not typically received a lot of attention in early stage development and be prepared to advance a value proposition that addresses these issues to securing early funding, design clinical trials, develop sufficient clinical evidence to meet differing payer criteria, and creating a sustainable business plan.  Health care policies, and specific goals of both private and public sector payers, are changing rapidly to focus on additional objectives such as bundled payments, outcomes (quality of care), patient-centered care, alternative delivery sites (e.g., home-based care instead of hospital stays), and preventive care—in addition to controlling costs.  Payer policies are in flux with respect to coverage and reimbursement methodology – for example, beginning in 2018, Medicare will link its clinical laboratory payments to commercial payer rates. Providers and suppliers need to be convinced that new products meet their own metrics for care and costs, including in many cases, the application of pathway-driven methodologies – which may result in additional barriers to entry.   These changes dramatically impact health care delivery, and require that innovative companies be nimble enough to these changes as they play out during the product development cycle.  This session will address emerging trends, expectations from investors when funding presentations are and evidence development strategy to ensure the data to develop and adapt a viable – and adaptable – reimbursement strategy are generated.
