The Redefining Categories project is a collection of digital images created by students in the Culture, Art, Technology program. The students began by choosing a common cultural category, such as “man/woman,” “black/white,” “east/west,” “nature/technology,” “gay/straight,” “art/science.” They then created a multi-layered Photoshop composite that “redefines” the category through imagery that provides a truer representation of the complexity of the subject matter. In essence, it translates black and white thinking into shades of gray and more reflective consideration. Created by Steve Carlisle's CAT-1 course in Fall 2005 and Fall 2006.
